Created in 1957, DFI is a regulatory agency serving the people of Illinois under the express control and administrative jurisdiction of the Governor. The Financial Institutions Code provides the authority to regulate, license, examine and investigate currency exchanges, credit unions, consumer finance companies, title insurance companies and money transmitters.

The Division of Real Estate is responsible for regulating professionals involved in the buying and selling of property. It licenses and enforces the practice of real estate broker and managing brokers, real estate firms, real estate appraisers, auctioneers, auction firms, community association managers, home inspectors, and home inspector entities. Real estate, appraisal, auction and home inspection schools, instructors, and courses, are also regulated by the Division.
