Springfield – The Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) today announced that registration packets for surgical assistants and surgical technologists are now available in Illinois . Registration of surgical specialists will increase the quality of health care for Illinois citizens, meeting Governor Blagojevich's goal of providing high quality health care to all Illinoisans. Knowing that surgical staff are registered and have met national accreditation standards will improve the success rate of treatments and increase patient confidence.

“Knowing that all of the staff working in an operating room are certified for the work they are doing will offer Illinoisans peace of mind as they face complex health treatments, said Fernando Grillo, Secretary, IDFPR. “It will also recognize the educational achievements of accredited surgical professionals.”

The Department estimates that about 200 surgical assistants and 800 -1000 surgical technologists working in hospitals and clinics across the state will apply for registration. Registration of these two health-related specialties is available only to surgical technologists and assistants who have completed programs that are recognized by one of several national accreditation organizations.

The application packets contain detailed instructions and requirements and are now available to be downloaded and printed at www.idfpr.com . Initial registration costs $100 and renewals (every two years) cost $62.50 per year.
