State Seeking Candidates for Nursing Center Advisory Board

Earlier this year, Governor Blagojevich announced the creation of a Center for Nursing within the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation as part of his ongoing efforts to ease the nursing shortage and improve access to quality health care for Illinois families.

The Center will develop a strategic plan for nursing manpower in Illinois, maintain a database on nursing supply and demand, and create nursing retention and recruitment initiatives. A more detailed explanation of the Board's duties and responsibilities appears below.  The legislation needed to create this center was signed in July and Governor Blagojevich is now seeking candidates to make up the Center's Advisory Board.

Legislation was written to amend Nursing Practice Act to create a nursing center at IDFPR. The Nursing Center is charged with the following goals (among others):

        *       Developing a strategic plan for nursing manpower in IL
        *       Maintaining a database on nursing supply and demand in IL
        *       Selecting priorities to be addressed
        *       Convening groups of stakeholders to recommend strategies/systemic changes
        *       Enhancing and promoting recognition, reward, and renewal activities for nurses
        *       Seeking non-state funds for carrying out nursing policy

The Act also creates an advisory board, consisting of 11 members appointed by the Governor. The Board must try to reflect the geographic areas of the state, and must include industry stakeholders (i.e. hospitals), nursing schools, and a variety of nurses in different practice settings. The Nursing Act Coordinator will chair the Advisory Board.
